I never really thought I would be an artist.
I grew up with an engineer for a father. While my artistic proclivities were always supported by him and my mother, the though of actually “being” an artist or pursuing a career in the arts was not something I took seriously. However, when I started my freshman year at Florida State University, I found myself crying over my chemistry textbook and making pinch pots in my dorm room.
After my two years in Mendocino, I decided it was time for a change. I had always been fascinated by the American Southwest. It was pretty much the polar opposite place of my hometown in South Florida. In 2018 I applied to be a Resident Artist at Taos Clay Studio and before long, I was packing up my 2002 Honda Odyssey and heading off to Northern New Mexico with my late rescue cat, Kit.
I ultimately changed my major to Art History and Studio Art, with a focus in ceramics. I didn’t have a plan per se, but I knew I would find my way. After finishing college, I spent two years at the Mendocino Art Center in Northern California as a Resident Artist in the Ceramics Department. This is where I really developed my sgraffito skill and began honing my style.
I spent five years in New Mexico where I solidified my artistic style even further. The inspiration I found in the high desert was plentiful and frankly overwhelming. My artwork in this time reflects the dramatic landscapes of Taos and Santa Fe. I truly loved it there. It felt like the Wild West, like no other place I had ever been before. During my time there, I helped to start Taos Ceramics Center where I taught wheel throwing and surface design classes during COVID. My passion for teaching grew exponentially as I realized how much the human spirt needs to express creativity especially in times of crisis.
I had been living very far away from my family for quite some time at this point and was ready to be close to my only sister again. In 2023, I made the decision to leave my beloved New Mexico to live in San Francisco. I caught a lucky break and landed a job at Clayroom San Mateo, located on the Peninsula just south of SF. As Head of Studio at Clayroom, I strive to foster an environment of creativity, self expression and discovery of the ceramic arts. I teach classes, schedule workshops and manage the day to day operations of a studio that sees thousands of students and members per year.
In my spare time, I make my own artwork and continue my ceramics journey while my curious cat, Link, plays with my paintbrushes and perches on my pottery wheel. If you’ve made it this far - thank you for taking the time to read about my story! It has been a long road but I wouldn’t change a thing. My work explores the intersection of place, time, and memory through highly decorative functional pottery, using sgraffito and intricate imagery to tell layered visual stories. Each piece is a vessel not just for use, but for reflection—inviting the viewer to consider their own connections to landscapes, histories, and fleeting moments. Through this tactile and visual language, I aim to create everyday objects that evoke personal and collective memory.
